NVIDIA Pulls Plug on Driver Support for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta GPUs

NVIDIA just made a major announcement that will affect millions of gamers around the world. The graphics card giant plans to stop making new drivers for some older GPU models after the upcoming 580 driver series launches. Gamers who still use Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta graphics cards should prepare for the end of official support from the company. These older cards include popular models like the GTX 700, GTX 900, and GTX 1000 series that many people still rely on for gaming. The tech company says these graphics cards have reached the end of their supported lifespan.

NVIDIA currently releases driver version 570 for its newest RTX 50 series graphics cards. The company expects to launch driver series 580 before the year ends. After that major update rolls out, older graphics card models will stop receiving fresh driver downloads from NVIDIA. The affected graphics cards range from eight to eleven years old, which makes them ancient in computer technology terms. Hardware companies typically abandon support for older products as they focus resources on newer technology.

Graphics card owners should not panic about losing driver support immediately. NVIDIA will continue updating the 580 driver series for several months after its initial release. This means gamers can keep using their older cards and receive bug fixes and performance improvements for a reasonable period. The transition gives people time to consider upgrading to newer graphics cards that will receive continued software support.
