NVIDIA RTX NTC, DirectX 1.2 slash VRAM by 80 percent, enraging gamers

Researchers have demonstrated significant performance gains when combining NVIDIA's Neural Texture Compression technology with Microsoft's DirectX Raytracing 1.2 framework. Testing conducted by developer @opinali revealed substantial reductions in video memory consumption during graphics rendering operations. The Neural Texture Compression system employs artificial intelligence networks to compress and decompress game textures while maintaining visual quality. Microsoft's DirectX Raytracing 1.2 introduces Cooperative Vectors that enable graphics processing unit shaders to collaborate on mathematical operations. These combined technologies create an efficient compression system that operates within standard DirectX 12 game shaders.

Performance benchmarks showed dramatic differences between enabled and disabled configurations during texture rendering tests. The iconic shoe rendering demonstration achieved 2,350 frames per second when both technologies operated together under default settings. Disabling the combined features reduced performance to 1,030 frames per second, representing an 80 percent decrease in rendering speed. Video memory usage also decreased substantially when both systems functioned simultaneously. Currently, only NVIDIA graphics cards support Neural Texture Compression because competing manufacturers have not developed comparable neural rendering capabilities.

Access to Neural Texture Compression requires NVIDIA's 590.26 preview driver software, which also delivers Smooth Motion technology features. However, preview drivers may introduce system instability and performance disruptions for users. The combination of these software advancements suggests that future graphics cards will achieve greater performance improvements through enhanced software capabilities rather than hardware alone.
