Ogun State officials are setting up free lead-poisoning tests for people living near those battery-recycling plants in Ogijo after some viral videos sparked contamination concerns. Health Commissioner Dr Tomi Coker says the testing center at Ogijo Primary Health Centre is ready to go with all the gear and staff lined up.
The government already shut down six battery facilities and paused ingot exports while they figure this out. Environment Commissioner Dr Ola Oresanya warned that any company failing the upcoming process audit gets closed until they fix their operations completely. He told local community groups to stop prioritizing money from these companies and quit selling land for factories in residential zones, since the state will not approve permits for that anymore.
The Ologijo of Ogijo thanked officials for stepping in, and community leaders promised to spread the word about getting tested.
