One click away from cyber doom, NCC warns

Your phone is basically a welcome mat for scammers. The Nigerian Communications Commission issued a fresh warning, noting that everyone's reliance on smartphones and internet services has massively upped the risks of phishing, malware, and identity theft. They point out that cybercriminals prey on simple human error, where one wrong click can drain a bank account or hijack personal data. In response, the regulator has pushed out a new A-to-Z cybersecurity guide, shifting its focus from just policing telecom companies to trying to equip regular users with actual defense skills.

This guide is part of a larger consumer education push for better national cyber hygiene. The NCC’s own dedicated Computer Security Incident Response Team works on handling incidents and protecting critical infrastructure. Their practical tips for people include turning on two-factor authentication, using strong, unique passwords, updating software religiously, and securing home Wi-Fi networks. They also advise avoiding shady links, limiting oversharing online, locking devices, steering clear of public Wi-Fi for anything important, and reporting any suspected scams immediately.

The commission argues that consistently using these steps will cut down attack exposure and help build a tougher digital environment. Their effort complements existing work, which involves setting security rules for telecom operators and running awareness campaigns. The underlying message is that with scams on the rise, safety can not just be the government’s or the service provider’s job anymore.
