Pakistan records 405 honour killings as influencer is slain

Pakistan's Human Rights Commission documented 405 honor killings during 2024, with women comprising the majority of victims murdered by family members. These deaths occurred when relatives claimed they were defending family honor through violence.

Recent incidents highlight the persistent problem across the nation. A couple died after tribal council orders in Balochistan for marrying without family approval. Social media influencer Sana Yousuf was shot at her Islamabad residence by a visiting male relative who immediately fled the scene. The content creator had gained over 400,000 followers before her death.

Pakistan banned honor killings in 2016 following activist Qandeel Baloch's murder, eliminating legal loopholes that previously allowed perpetrators to escape punishment through family pardons. However, enforcement remains inadequate, particularly in rural regions where traditional tribal councils maintain authority. Constitutional lawyer Asad Rahim Khan criticized the government's inaction and efforts to weaken judicial systems, rather than implementing existing protective legislation.
