People Power to Protest MACRA Tech Machine

Citizens' Group Plans MACRA Protest in Lilongwe.

A civic group called People Power Movement will hold protests at the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority next week.

The group sent notice to Lilongwe District Council about peaceful demonstrations set for February 13, 2025. Leaders Edwards Kambanje and Oliver Nakoma outlined plans to march from Malawi Square at BICC to MACRA offices in Area 13.

Protesters aim to stop MACRA from buying what they call a controversial technology machine. The group claims this purchase would harm privacy rights and free speech. They want MACRA to use the money for pressing economic needs instead.

The notice follows Section 38 of Malawi's Constitution, which requires groups to inform officials before protests. The council must review these plans and provide guidance.

People Power Movement has called on all citizens to join the demonstration against MACRA's plans.
