Peterhouse Boys Accused of Racial Bias in Teacher Hiring

Reports say Peterhouse Boys School faces claims about unfair treatment of black staff and students. The Anglican school has been accused of bias toward white people. This is not the first time such claims have come up. Back in 2020, black teachers and students spoke out about feeling separate from others.

Staff members who did not share their names told a news site that problems exist at the school. They said a new Head of Studies was told to find ways to remove black teachers. Some black teachers are going through hearings. Others have lost their jobs and been replaced by white teachers.

The school is said to be hiring teachers from as far away as Australia, even though many skilled local teachers need jobs. Some think the school wants more white students. They believe removing black teachers helps attract them, which seems to match what other schools do.

Black teachers at the school may have harder working terms than others. They might teach more subjects but have less time to do it. Some think this sets them up to fail. White staff members appear to have easier loads and more time for their subjects. This makes their results look better.

The school had problems with test scores. Boys at Peterhouse scored 77.6% on recent exams. Girls at Peterhouse scored over 96%. Some say this difference exists because more white teachers work at the girls' school. The boys' school has more black students and teachers.

Black teachers earn under $1,500 US dollars total each month, while people think white teachers from Australia and the UK earn more money. School leaders have not been clear about the real pass rates, and parents, teachers, and school staff each heard different numbers about how well students did.

The school head emailed parents about the low scores. Some staff think racial bias in hiring affects student success. When asked about these issues, Jon Trafford, the school leader, denied all claims. He said the school values being open with information.

Trafford stated that the school has clear rules about staff care and shares test results with parents directly. He does not think fees and test scores are linked. Trafford added that not all public claims match what really happens at the school.
