Piyush Goyal holds EU hostage over 'unfair' green tax

India and the European Union plan to complete trade negotiations within three months, resolving disputes over agriculture, sustainability standards, and market access in what analysts describe as a potentially transformative commercial agreement. Negotiators report accelerated progress following the implementation of tariff policies by President Donald Trump, which has intensified European interest in alternative trading partnerships. The European bloc views the arrangement as protection against economic instability, but New Delhi approaches it as a strategic assertion after years of economic reforms and expansion.

India opposes mandatory sustainability requirements linked to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal called unjust penalties on developing nations for emissions they did not produce. European officials seeking to reduce their dependence on Russia and China have identified India as essential to diversification efforts, despite its continued ties to Moscow. Analysts note that completion would establish India as a major force in global trade governance, but delays would simply reflect the complexity of negotiations between economic powers of comparable strength.
