Playden brings Steam Windows games to jailbroken PS5

Playden lets a jailbroken PlayStation 5 play some Windows PC games from a user's Steam library. The free, open-source tool comes from developer leolobato and uses a PS5 version of Wine called prospero-win. It can even add each PC title to the console's Home screen as a separate app.

And this is more than a basic game launcher. Players can log in to Steam, check their purchased titles, get game files, and start supported releases on their console. Those who prefer not to link an account can load PC game folders from a USB drive, M.2 SSD, or FTP connection.

Each game also gets its own Windows-style setup, known as a bottle. That keeps files and settings apart, which may help stop one title from messing with another. Steam Cloud saves, custom graphics options, and controller settings are part of the package as well.

For graphics, Playden uses a few different tools. DXVK handles Direct3D 8 through 11, while vkd3d-proton deals with Direct3D 12. Mesa's Zink takes care of OpenGL, and some games can use Vulkan without an extra layer.

The DualSense gets support through Xbox controller mapping, which helps Windows titles read its inputs. Still, how well that works can depend on the game.

Compatibility is where things get quite interesting. Celeste, Hollow Knight, Vampire Survivors, and Papers, Please appear on the working list. Bigger releases such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Resident Evil 4 have also shown signs of working.

Cyberpunk 2077, for instance, made it through its menus, character setup, Nomad intro, and garage section in one test. The run lasted 13 minutes and used about 3 GB of video memory. But no frame rate was logged, which leaves its actual speed unclear.

Not every game is ready for this setup. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, Counter-Strike 2, Hades II, Hi-Fi Rush, Marvel Rivals, and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance are among the titles marked as broken.

Some of the hurdles come from anti-cheat tools and Denuvo protection. Other games need launchers that start more programs, specific Direct3D features, or file access limits that the current setup cannot handle.

The project is still in alpha, and there are real security risks. Playden keeps Steam login tokens on the PS5 without encryption. It can also sync game saves, which means a bug could replace good cloud data with old or damaged files.

There is a bigger risk with the console itself. Games launched through Playden may gain high-level system access. The developer urges people to use trusted software, as a bad file could put stored data or account details at risk.

Getting it running also takes more than installing one app. A compatible PS5 jailbreak is required, along with root-level tools such as kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, and an ELF loader. Those payloads need to run again when the console restarts.

Meanwhile, PS5 homebrew has seen other advances. Leaked Level 0 BootROM keys have raised hopes for wider custom firmware support, while PSBOX has already brought Xbox Cloud Gaming to hacked consoles. Neither development means every PS5 can use these tools.

For players who enjoy trying out new console software, it offers an unusual way to test PC titles on Sony hardware. Yet it remains far from a full gaming PC replacement, with patchy support, limited speed data, and account safety concerns.
