Police chief seeks contempt for activist social media post

Namibian Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo is taking social activist Michael Amushelelo to court over some serious Facebook drama. Shikongo wants the High Court to order Amushelelo to remove his social media posts and declare him in contempt of court.

The whole mess started with a previous defamation case in which Shikongo sued Amushelelo for a million Namibian dollars. They settled with Amushelelo, agreeing to apologize and stop making statements about a fatal road accident involving Shikongo in December 2022.

But Amushelelo didn't stick to the deal. He posted comments suggesting Shikongo should be arrested for the collision that killed three people. Shikongo argues these posts damage his reputation and could undermine public trust in the police force.

During the court hearing, Amushelelo tried to delay proceedings. He said he was raising money for a lawyer and needed more time. The judge gave him a tight deadline to find legal representation. When the judge pushed forward with the hearing, Amushelelo complained about his rights and asked for the judge to step down from the case.

Shikongo's lawyer opposed Amushelelo's request to have the judge recused. The judge postponed her ruling on the recusal application. The entire situation highlights a tense legal battle between a high-ranking police official and a vocal social activist challenging official accountability.
