Pool Panic After Harare Teacher Ditches Toddlers

Martha Karota Rice faces serious charges after a three-year-old student died at her school. The Early Childhood Development teacher works at St Anne's Primary School in Harare. Police arrested her for culpable homicide following the drowning incident. Harare regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa sent her to jail until today. She will ask for bail at her next court appearance.

Rice supervised eight young students from two different classes that morning. The teacher left seven children alone around 11:30 am and went inside the school building. She forgot to lock the swimming pool gate before leaving the area. The three-year-old child walked into the pool area and drowned. Rice found the child in the water and pulled the body out.

The teacher called for help from other people at the school. Someone reported the tragedy to police officers. Rice remains in custody waiting for her bail hearing. The court will decide if she can leave jail before her trial.
