Poonam Pandey vows 9-day fast in Delhi Ramleela role row

Delhi's UNESCO-recognized Luv-Kush Ramleela organizing committee responded to criticism regarding actress Poonam Pandey's casting as Mandodari. The committee released footage addressing public concerns about her participation in the religious drama. Pandey expressed enthusiasm about portraying Ravan's wife at Red Fort's renowned performance venue. She described the character as significant within the epic narrative. The actress announced plans to observe Navratri fasting rituals for spiritual preparation.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad previously voiced opposition to Pandey's involvement in the production. The organization cited her past controversial actions as potentially offensive to religious audiences. VHP representatives argued that casting decisions should consider cultural sensitivity alongside acting abilities. Critics referenced her 2011 publicity stunt and 2024 fake death announcement as problematic precedents.

This year's Red Fort Ramleela features Arya Babbar as Ravan and Kinshuk Vaidya as Ram. Rini Arya portrays Sita while BJP parliamentarian Manoj Tiwari appears as Parashurama. The traditional performance begins September 22nd despite ongoing public debate about casting choices.
