Prez Nandi Bags More German Genocide Cash

Germany plans to pay more money for colonial crimes against the Namibian people. President Nandi-Ndaitwah announced that Germany agreed to increase its payment beyond the original €1.1 billion offer. The nations had reached a deal in 2021 about the 1904-1908 genocide of the Ovaherero and Nama groups. Under that agreement, Germany officially said sorry for the killings during its rule. The promised funds would come as development aid spread across three decades.

Many affected families refused the deal when first proposed. They felt unhappy with both the amount offered and how the talks happened. The communities wanted direct input on negotiations. They believed the sum failed to match the harm caused. The agreement sparked protests from descendants who demanded better terms. Their representatives asked for fair compensation that addressed historical wrongs.

The new offer shows Germany recognizes community concerns about justice. President Nandi-Ndaitwah did not share exact figures for the increased payment. The genocide killed tens of thousands of indigenous people during German colonial control. Affected groups sought recognition and payment for generations. This revised approach may help heal deep historical wounds between the nations.
