Prof Alhassan GBC axes Accra studios as 100k cedi ECG bills bite

Ghana Broadcasting Corporation has shuttered two production facilities after electricity expenses became unmanageable. The state broadcaster transfers 100,000 Ghana Cedis each week to the Electricity Company of Ghana to prevent service disconnection. Solar power already supports thirty percent of Adjankote Transmission Line operations and half of Takoradi branch activities. Management plans expanding renewable energy systems to the Kanda location for cost reduction. Parliamentary Committee on Communication and Information members learned about these financial challenges during their recent visit.

Director General Prof. Amin Alhassan restricts one studio to four-hour morning operations between six and ten o'clock. Equipment replacement requires millions of dollars that exceed internal revenue capacity. Japanese assistance previously enabled equipment purchases, but similar support remains unavailable for additional studio maintenance. The corporation reduces power consumption as the primary strategy for managing overwhelming utility expenses. Broadcasting operations continue under these severe financial constraints while seeking sustainable energy alternatives.
