Professor Akabzaa dies just weeks into PURC job

Prof Thomas Mba Akabzaa has passed away shortly after becoming Chairman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission. The respected professor died on April 17 at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, just weeks after his virtual swearing-in ceremony on March 28. President Mahama appointed him to lead the eight-member PURC Board earlier this year. His family confirmed his death to news outlets, though they did not reveal what caused it.

Akabzaa taught at the University of Ghana Department of Earth Science, where he specialized in mining, environmental issues, and natural resource management. His academic work received over 2,000 citations worldwide. He wrote two important books that examined how mining affects communities and the environment in Ghana. These publications highlighted problems in mining areas like the Wassa West District and Obuasi.

His career extended beyond university life into government service. He worked as the Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy for six years from 2011. He earned recognition as Best Performing Chief Director twice during his time there. He also chaired the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited, serving with many local and international professional organizations. People throughout academic, government regulatory circles mourn his loss, remembering him for his intelligence, dedication leadership.
