Prosecution seeks to reinstate corruption conviction of former Felda chairman

Prosecutors filed a massive appeal against a former government official who beat corruption charges. They listed 24 reasons why the Court of Appeal made mistakes when they freed Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad. The man used to run Felda and faced nine corruption charges. A lower court had already found him guilty and sentenced him to six years behind bars. The appeal court threw out that decision and let him walk free.

The prosecution wants the Federal Court to bring back the original guilty verdict. They claim Mohd Isa told his assistant Muhammad Zahid to collect bribes from a businessman named Ikhwan Zaidel. The case involves over three million ringgit that changed hands during hotel deal talks. Court papers show the case management starts this Monday. Prosecutors say they have solid evidence that proves the former chairman broke the law.

The appeal court judges disagreed with the original trial court about key facts. They said the phrase about taking whatever people give could not count as asking for bribes. Prosecutors argue this interpretation was wrong and the words clearly meant corruption. Muhammad Zahid testified that he understood his boss wanted him to collect money from Ikhwan. The businessman had thanked Mohd Isa for approving a hotel purchase worth 160 million ringgit.

The corruption charges stem from events between 2014 and 2015 at the Felda headquarters. Prosecutors maintain that both witnesses were credible and their stories matched up perfectly. The Federal Court must decide whether to restore the original conviction and prison sentence.
