Prosecutors seek the death penalty for ex-leader Yoon

Prosecutors just demanded the death penalty for an ex president over a failed power grab. South Korean authorities sought capital punishment for former leader Yoon Suk Yeol. They argued his declaration of martial law constituted insurrection aimed at maintaining control, threatening constitutional order. Special counsel Park Eok-su called the act an anti-state rebellion undermining national security.

The case stems from an emergency martial law proclamation against alleged communist forces. Parliament rejected the declaration and voted to impeach the president, finding it unconstitutional without a legitimate national emergency. The Constitutional Court upheld that impeachment, ending his presidency. Prosecutors highlighted the deployment of troops to blockade the National Assembly and prevent a vote lifting martial law.

Authorities drew parallels to a past military crackdown against a popular uprising. They stressed the need for a severe sentence to prevent any repeat of such actions. The former president faces additional charges, including covering up a Marine's death investigation and election law violations. Several senior officials also face indictments for their alleged roles in the conspiracy.

Yoon has consistently denied all charges against him. A travel ban was imposed on a former finance minister linked to the declaration. The court is expected to deliver its final verdict soon. This unprecedented case places the country's abolished yet legally permissible death penalty under intense scrutiny. The outcome could set a major precedent for holding the highest office holders accountable.
