PS5 Shipments Dive As Sony Bets on Games

Sony reports PS5 has reached 77.8 million units sold worldwide. The company shipped just 2.8 million consoles last quarter, down from 4.5 million during the same period last year. Total sales fell from 20.8 million units in fiscal year 2023 to 18.5 million in 2024. Sony expects hardware sales will continue to fall next fiscal year.

Game sales tell a different story, with overall numbers rising from 286.4 million to 303.3 million units across PS4 and PS5. Most growth came from third-party titles, as first-party game sales actually decreased from 39.7 million to 28.9 million units. Digital downloads grew more popular, jumping from 70% to 76% of all game sales. The upcoming Ghost of Yotei, launching October 2, should boost first-party sales.

PlayStation Network users increased to 124 million monthly active players, up 5% from last year. This growth might stem partly from PC games that recently began requiring PlayStation Network accounts. Despite falling hardware numbers, Sony projects higher profits next fiscal year thanks to strong software performance. The company forecasts that first-party and third-party game sales will offset declining console revenue.
