Qualcomm In Panic as Apple Preps Own Chips

Qualcomm beat market hopes with $10.84 billion for its second quarter of 2025, but faces future hurdles. The company saw net income rise to $2.81 billion from $2.33 billion last year, partly thanks to strong Snapdragon 8 Elite sales to partners like Samsung. Higher wafer costs might force phone makers to pay more for chips soon. Their chipset business grew 12 percent yearly.

Apple plans to stop using Qualcomm 5G modems after 2027, already putting its first homemade chip in the iPhone 16e. Chinese rivals add pressure as Huawei makes its Kirin chips again, with Xiaomi expected to launch its first custom chip next month. These changes threaten key income streams for the San Diego firm.

CEO Cristiano Amon said the company focuses on new areas, with car-related sales up 59 percent yearly. Their Internet-of-Things business also jumped 27 percent. Qualcomm will power more Windows laptops next year, along with Meta headsets. The company prepares for the coming challenges through these efforts outside of phones.
