Raila says rival bidders paid to kill Adani's JKIA deal

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga condemned opponents who caused the collapse of the Adani Group's airport modernization agreement. He accused critics of having competing commercial interests and financing campaigns to undermine the Indian conglomerate's reputation. Odinga argued that Nairobi forfeited its opportunity to become Africa's aviation center due to unnecessary political opposition. The leader stated that Rwanda's capital city would capture regional hub status through similar infrastructure development projects. He warned that Kenya's primary airport would stagnate while neighboring nations advance their aviation facilities.

The abandoned agreement valued at 637 billion shillings would have granted Adani operational control over Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for three decades. President William Ruto terminated the contract following sustained public criticism and parliamentary scrutiny. Odinga previously expressed disappointment when the expansion project faced political interference during his tenure as Prime Minister. The ODM party leader emphasized that competitive bidding processes had repeatedly selected contractors who later withdrew from the development initiative. He cautioned that inaction would prevent Kenya from capitalizing on regional transportation opportunities.
