Rainfall Deficit Hits 19.3% in Bangladesh, Heatwave Sweeps the Country

Bangladesh faced a serious drought during June as rain stayed away from most areas. Weather experts found the country received 19 percent less water than normal times. The total rainfall hit just 347 millimeters when 434 millimeters should have fallen. Dhaka and Sylhet divisions suffered the worst shortages across the nation. These regions saw rain drop by 33 percent and 49 percent below their usual amounts.

Heat waves made life miserable for people during the first half of June. Temperatures climbed to dangerous levels as hot air moved across the land. The mercury peaked at 38.8 degrees at Dimla on June 14th. Kutubdia recorded the highest single day of rain with 180 millimeters on June 1st. Most places stayed hotter than normal throughout the entire month.

Khulna and Barishal divisions escaped the dry spell that hit other areas. These southern regions actually received more rain than their normal patterns. Khulna got 6 percent extra water compared to typical June weather. Barishal saw rainfall jump 12 percent above its usual monthly total.

Weather forecasters predict July will bring normal rainfall amounts across Bangladesh. They expect one to three low pressure systems to form over the Bay of Bengal. Rivers should rise during early July before reaching normal flow levels later. The weather service warns of possible heat waves and thunderstorms during the coming weeks.
