Ramaphosa urges G20 to act on global inequality in Joburg

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged international leaders to take decisive action against global inequality, describing it as a severe threat to stability and economic prosperity. In his weekly newsletter, he cited a recent expert report that found that the wealthiest ten percent of the global population controls a disproportionate share of total income and assets.

As the current G20 chair, South Africa has prioritized addressing inequality alongside sustainability and solidarity. The report, led by economist Joseph Stiglitz, proposes establishing a permanent international body to monitor inequality trends and advises governments to implement progressive policies such as fairer tax systems and debt relief for developing nations.

President Ramaphosa emphasized that widespread economic disparity undermines democracy and fuels conflict. He stated that the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg would formally consider the report’s recommendations, marking the first time the forum has conducted an in-depth examination of this issue.
