Rare red-necked grebes spotted in Gatchina Park, listed in Red Book

Wildlife expert Pavel Glazkov found some special water birds living around Gatchina Park. Red-necked grebes call this area home and these creatures appear on the protected species list for Leningrad Region. The birds have made babies here successfully for many years running. Adult grebes show off bright colors and sport yellow feathers that stick up like tiny golden horns on their heads. Baby grebes look quite different from their parents and resemble those plain gray ducklings with striped markings.

Parent birds take extra care of their young ones during dangerous moments. Mom and dad grebes let babies ride on their backs when threats appear nearby. These protective parents can even swim underwater with their children clinging on tight. The diving ability helps families escape from predators that might want to harm the little ones. Glazkov mentions that people can also spot these same birds around St. Petersburg waters.
