Ridley Scott says modern movies are garbage

Director Ridley Scott criticized the modern film industry on Monday at the British Film Institute, and he told audiences that most contemporary cinema lacks quality. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker stated millions of films are produced globally each year, but he believes the majority fail to meet basic standards. Scott argued that many productions rely heavily on digital effects to compensate for weak screenwriting.

The Gladiator director admitted he recently rewatched his own work, and he found his films hold up better than current releases. Scott mentioned his 2001 film Black Hawk Down impressed him upon review, but he expressed relief when discovering quality films from other directors. The filmmaker confirmed he finished production on The Dog Stars with Jacob Elordi, and he began writing a third Gladiator installment featuring Paul Mescal's character as Emperor of Rome.
