Rivers Suit Over Tinubu Rule Hits Court Again

A Port Harcourt court pushed back a case about Rivers State leadership until May 26. Former lawmaker Dr. Farah Dagogo claims President Tinubu broke the law when he removed Governor Fubara from office. The president said he acted because fighting between state leaders threatened oil facilities. He picked retired admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas to run the state after kicking out elected officials on March 18. Dagogo filed papers against this action on April 9.

Only Ibas sent a lawyer to Monday's hearing, though all five people named in the case received notice. Judge Adamu Mohammed gave everyone more time to prepare, but warned that the case must move forward next time. Dagogo's lawyer told reporters that presidents cannot remove people elected by voters. He pointed out that other states face worse violence without emergency rules. The lawyer praised Dagogo for standing up for the rights of four million Rivers people. He added that citizens deserve leaders they choose themselves through voting.
