Zimbabwe's government is trying to calm down some worried wildlife activists by promising that the major road repair work between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls near Hwange National Park isn't going to mess up the animals or their habitat. Engineer Joy Makumbe from the transport ministry told reporters during a site visit that her department has been working closely with the environment, tourism, and local government agencies to make sure everything stays sustainable and doesn't wreck the ecosystem.
Makumbe admitted that some environmental damage is basically unavoidable when you're doing big construction projects, but they've been meeting with different groups to figure out how to keep the disruption as minimal as possible. The road upgrade is a major route for tourism and trade, and officials say they're not going to let it trash the country's natural resources in the process.
