Rugby Mayhem as League Kicks Off March 22

The Rwanda Rugby Federation (RFF) has announced that the 2025 rugby league season will start on March 22. They decided this during their yearly meeting in Kigali on Sunday, February 09.

This year, 12 teams will play in the league. Three new teams are joining: Alpha Kagugu RFC, 1000 Hills, and Muhanga Thunders. The RFF accepted them as new members at the meeting.

Muhanga Thunders and 1000 Hills did not play last season for different reasons. Muhanga Thunders dropped out at the last minute because they did not have enough money. 1000 Hills could not play in any RFF matches until they finished some important paperwork to become a member.

The other teams playing this season are the champions Lions de Fer, Resilience, Kigali Sharks, UR Grizzlies, Gitisi TSS, Puma Kamonyi RFC, Rwamagana Hippos, and Burera Tigers.

The teams will be split into two groups. First, they will play games within their groups. Then, they will play knockout matches to determine the champion. Last year, Lions de Fer from Kigali won the final against Resilience.

The RFF members also voted for people to fill empty spots on their committee. Samuel Habimana is the new Secretary General. He replaces John Livingston Muhire, who left in June 2024 to work for the Rwanda football group FERWAFA.

Sandrine Murekatete from Rwamagana Hippos will be the Secretary of the Audit Committee. Albert Kayiranga from UR Grizzlies will lead the Arbitration Committee. Felix Uwitonze from Lions de Fer RFC and Mathieu Muvunyi from Kamonyi Panthers Womens RFC will help him.
