Russia Backs Zimbabwe's UN Security Council Bid.
Russia announced its support for Zimbabwe's campaign to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Russian Ambassador Nikolai Krasilnikov met with President Mnangagwa at State House in Harare to deliver the news, along with a message from President Vladimir Putin.
Zimbabwe seeks the seat for 2027-2028, with backing from Cuba, India, and several African regional bodies, including SADC. Ambassador Krasilnikov expressed confidence in future collaboration with Zimbabwe at the UN Security Council.
"We look forward to having Zimbabwe as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Together, we can build a more just and democratic multipolar world," Krasilnikov said after the closed-door meeting.
The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additional non-permanent members serve rotating terms. Any resolution requires nine votes from the 15-member council to pass, though permanent members hold veto power.
Zimbabwe previously served on the Security Council in 1983-1984 and 1991-1992. The ambassador highlighted shared interests between Russia and Zimbabwe, including their support for UN resolutions against racism and Nazi glorification.
The meeting underscored strong ties between Presidents Mnangagwa and Putin. "The political dialogue reflects deep, intense, and cordial relations between our leaders and nations," Krasilnikov stated. He praised Zimbabwe's regional peace efforts, particularly its role as SADC chair in addressing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Both nations expressed satisfaction with their political partnership and international cooperation. The ambassador emphasized their shared vision for global affairs and commitment to developing concrete benefits for both countries.
