Russia Eyes 2M Ruble Slap for Migrant Bosses

Lawmakers want to raise fines for hiring illegal migrants to 2 million rubles. The plan comes from Just Russia party members in parliament. They point to inflation rates and rising migrant wages as reasons for the change. Current fine levels have remained unchanged since 2016. Immigrant workers earn much more than before.

Migrant salaries jumped from 105,000 rubles monthly at the start of 2024 to almost 150,000 rubles by summer. Deputies hope to adjust penalties based on these higher earnings. They aim to increase fines for company officials to 350,000 rubles. Legal businesses might pay up to 2 million rubles under the new rules. These changes would represent a several-fold increase from current penalties.

The draft law heads to the State Duma soon for review. Supporters claim the higher fines match economic reality better than old rates. They argue current penalties fail to discourage companies from breaking immigration laws. The lawmakers say businesses save money with unauthorized workers. These savings exceed what companies risk paying as penalties today.
