RX 9070 Gains XT-Level Performance with BIOS Flash Trick

PC Games Hardware found that many AMD Radeon RX 9070 cards can run faster when you put RX 9070 XT software on them. This works when both cards have similar designs. The change lets your basic card use more power and run at higher speeds. It keeps the same 56 CU or 3,584 stream processors but opens up better overclocking room. Tests showed the changed RX 9070 performed 15-20% better than normal, matching what a regular RX 9070 XT can do. The 3DMark benchmark tests proved these results.

You should know about some risks before trying this. Changing card software can break your card if done wrong. This works best with cards that have backup software built in. Also, the software swap only works between cards built on the same boards. Many companies build their RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT cards almost the same, especially cheaper models. Right away, you might notice that no tools exist yet to change the RX 9000 series card software. The person who did this used special hardware to connect directly to the memory chip on the card. After all these changes, the card still shows up as a regular 9070, not an XT version.

A hardware expert named W1zzard explained why the name stays the same. AMD cards use something called a revision ID to tell different types apart. The 9070 XT models use C0, and regular 9070s use C3. Before these new cards came out, AMD stored this ID in the card software. If you changed the software, Windows would see a different ID and show a new name. AMD changed how they make software for these newer Navi 4x cards. They locked the revision ID part.

This helps stop fake cards from being sold. When you change the software, things like power limits and speeds come from the new software. But all the IDs and hardware counts stay fixed as they were before. The card knows what it really is deep down, even with new software loaded. This explains why your modified card still appears as a regular RX 9070 when checked by your computer.

This discovery excites many computer enthusiasts because it offers free performance gains. You can save money by buying the cheaper card and upgrading its performance without extra hardware costs. The risk remains high for beginners, but experienced users might find this trick worthwhile. Make sure you research your exact card model before attempting any changes. The results vary between different brands and models. Always back up your original software before making changes to your expensive graphics card.
