Sabah launches shellfish project to boost economy and exports

Sabah leaders launched a massive shellfish farming project that could pump millions into the state economy. Chief Minister Hajiji Noor announced the cockle industry might bring in RM34.4 million each year from 3,240 tonnes of shellfish. The government expects investors to make back seven times their money on this venture. Officials believe the seafood business will create jobs and boost exports through canned products and shellfish sambal. Private companies can jump into seafood processing and packaging for huge profits.

The state wants to make shellfish farming a major part of their Blue Economy plan. Government experts finished mapping studies at potential farming sites around Tuaran and Beluran from October 2024 to May 2025. Workers identified 77 farming areas covering 1,617 hectares for the second phase starting in 2026. Each farming spot will support 10 families, helping 770 people total. Farmers could earn between RM4,800 and RM6,500 monthly even if only 40 percent of sites work perfectly.

Young people will learn modern fish farming techniques to become marine business owners. The project targets fishermen, rural families, and low-income groups for the biggest benefits. Hajiji wants Sabah to compete with major seafood states like Perak, Penang, and Selangor. The government promises continuous training and modern technology for all participants. Officials believe this shellfish venture will transform Sabah into the top seafood hub across Southeast Asia.
