SADC Leader Mnangagwa Heads to Tanzania for Peace Talks.
President Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe will travel to Dar es Salaam for a meeting between two major African groups. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) aim to bring peace to eastern Congo.
The meeting brings together six key leaders. These include President Mnangagwa as SADC head, Angola's President Lourenço, and Madagascar's President Rajoelina. Tanzania's President Hassan, Zambia's President Hichilema, and Malawi's President Chakwera make up the rest of the group.
Presidential spokesman George Charamba said the meeting follows an earlier discussion in Harare about the Congo crisis. The two groups want to work together to help end the fighting.
"We want peace to last in Congo," Charamba said. He added that outside groups would join the talks to ensure that all views were heard.
Presidents Mnangagwa and Ruto of Kenya will lead the talks as heads of their groups. The meeting has a special meaning because Congo belongs to both SADC and EAC.
Congo says Rwanda helps rebel groups like M23 that cause harm in the east. Kenya reports that both Congo's President Tshisekedi and Rwanda's President Kagame will come to the talks.
The fighting has turned worse in eastern Congo. M23 rebels, with help from Rwanda's army, have taken the big city of Goma. They say they might march toward Congo's capital city.
The area has seen years of fighting. Armed groups battle for control of valuable minerals in the ground. The capture of Goma, which leads North Kivu, has made many people run from their homes.
M23 fighters have started moving toward South Kivu, putting another major city, Bukavu, at risk. The meeting hopes to stop more fighting and help the people who live there.
