SADC Mnangagwa Urges Unity for DRC Peace

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, head of SADC, asked African leaders to stand firm for their people. They met to find peace in Congo.

Leaders from East and South Africa came to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. They wanted to end the war in Congo, where armed groups took the city of Goma. This meeting comes after talks in Harare last week.

Speaking at the meeting on Saturday, Mnangagwa called for African nations to join hands. "We must stay as one like we did when we fought for freedom from those who ruled us," he said.

He pushed leaders to face the problem with clear minds. "We need truth and care to make peace in our Africa," Mnangagwa said.

The SADC head wants help for Congo's people first. "We must bring peace to our friends in Congo during our time," he said. He thinks this meeting should make clear steps toward peace.

"People trust us to make peace and help them grow. We must not let them down. They look to us," Mnangagwa told other leaders.

Rwanda's Paul Kagame joined the talks. Some say he helps the M23 rebels, who fight in Congo. These rebels killed 16 peace troops two weeks past.

The war pushed more than 400,000 Congo people from their homes since the year began. They left to find safe places as fights went on.
