Sarkozy freed after three weeks in jail, awaits appeal

Former French leader Nicolas Sarkozy walked free from a Paris detention facility on Monday after spending three weeks behind bars, with authorities imposing travel restrictions and judicial oversight pending his appeal hearing scheduled for March 2026. The 70-year-old center-right politician received a five-year sentence on October 21 following a conviction for criminal conspiracy tied to accepting illegal financing from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi during his 2007 presidential campaign.

Sarkozy departed La Santé prison shortly before 3:00 p.m. local time after a court approved his release request, with defense attorney Christophe Ingrain describing the decision as progress toward vindication. Release conditions prohibit contact with case witnesses or justice ministry personnel, while the former president maintains his innocence and vows to contest the charges at trial.

The politician became the first French head of state imprisoned since World War Two collaborationist Philippe Pétain faced treason charges in 1945. Sarkozy spent his incarceration in solitary confinement with bodyguards stationed nearby due to security concerns, having previously worn an electronic monitor following a separate bribery conviction in December 2024.
