Saudi Billions Bankroll Club World Cup 1bn Prize Frenzy

Saudi Arabia funds the new Club World Cup through multiple business deals. The kingdom's Public Investment Fund bought part of DAZN streaming service for one billion dollars. DAZN paid FIFA the same amount for broadcasting rights to the tournament. Real Madrid spent eight million pounds to release Trent Alexander-Arnold early from Liverpool just to play. The competition offers nearly 100 million pounds to winning teams.

Critics question whether Saudi money influenced FIFA's decision to award the 2034 World Cup to the kingdom. Australia dropped out of World Cup bidding after FIFA gave countries less than one month to prepare. The Saudi bid faced no opposition and received record-high scores from FIFA evaluators. Only Norway's soccer federation objected to the selection process. FIFA approved Saudi Arabia through applause rather than traditional voting.

Sports experts believe Saudi Arabia needed the Club World Cup to establish itself as a soccer nation. The kingdom wants to boost tourism and modernize through sports investments. Al-Hilal represents Saudi Arabia at the current tournament. Player unions complain about too many games hurting athlete health. FIFA considers expanding future tournaments to 48 teams despite these concerns.
