Sekondi Takoradi Buildings Set to Crash Down Soon

NADMO found almost a hundred unsafe buildings in Sekondi-Takoradi. They marked these places for teardown because they might fall apart any day. The city has 56 bad structures in Essikado-Ketan, 21 in Sekondi, and 18 in Takoradi. These buildings threaten everyone nearby.

Emma Adu-Boafo from NADMO discussed this problem yesterday. She said many owners refuse to tear down these buildings because they belonged to their ancestors. Some people believe family houses must stay standing forever. NADMO has already sent notices to many homes but faces strong pushback from residents.

The group asked courts to help force teardowns when they cannot find building owners. They hope to start work this year. People who live in these places must pay for taking them down, which makes many resist. Five people died back in 2019 when an old mud house fell during rain at Ngyiresia near Essikado.
