Selangor proposes vape tax revenue to support local enforcement and education efforts

The Selangor government has proposed that part of the tax revenue from the sale of electronic cigarettes (vape) products be distributed to state governments and local authorities (PBT).

State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin explained that this move would help manage the negative effects of vape sales and support enforcement and public education efforts at the grassroots level.

She emphasized that state governments and PBTs need adequate resources to conduct enforcement operations, particularly against illegal vape sales to teenagers, and to implement community awareness programs. The funds could also support educational institutions and provide rehabilitation for nicotine addiction.

Jamaliah also called on the Ministry of Health (MOH) to establish a collaborative mechanism with state governments to address local needs regarding vape control. She stressed that cooperation between federal and state authorities would enhance efforts to curb vape use effectively.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni had previously announced plans to increase taxes on e-cigarettes from 40 sen to RM4 per milliliter to align vape taxes with those of tobacco products.
