Senate Reduces Orwoba Suspension to 30 Days Following Apology

The Senate has decided to change how long Gloria Orwoba, a Nominated Senator, will be suspended from the Senate and Parliament. Instead of being suspended for 79 days, she will only be suspended for 30 days.

Aaron Cheruiyot, the Senate Majority Leader, said they made this decision because Senator Orwoba has shown that she is truly sorry for what she did. He said that after the Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi talked about what happened with Senator Orwoba on February 12, they think she should be allowed to come back to the Senate on March 13 this year.

Senator Cheruiyot explained that Senator Orwoba has apologized for her behavior. The Senate has agreed to change her suspension from 79 days to just 30 days.

The Majority Leader said that Senator Orwoba started her suspension on February 12 this year. She will be allowed to return to the Senate and Parliament on March 13 this year, following the rules the Senate made on September 20, 2023.

Stewart Madzayo, the Senate Minority Leader, agreed with the idea of reducing Senator Orwoba's suspension to 30 days. He said that she had apologized to the Senate and admitted she had done something wrong. He believes it is a good idea to reduce her suspension time because she has learned her lesson and probably will not make the same mistakes again.

Senator Edwin Sifuna from Nairobi asked if the people who were affected by Senator Orwoba's actions had said anything about it. He wants to know this before the Senate makes a final decision.

Joyce Korir, the Vice Chairperson of the Parliamentary Service Commission, asked the other Senators to let Senator Orwoba return to the Senate on March 13. She said that everyone makes mistakes sometimes when they are working.

Senator Julius Murgor from West Pokot said that 30 days is enough time for Senator Orwoba to learn. He asked her to show the Senate that she was truly sorry when she came back by not making the same mistake again. He wants her to treat her fellow Senators and the Senate staff with respect.

Senator Orwoba apologized to the Senate as she started her suspension. She got a chance to speak to the Senate right after the Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi talked about her situation on February 12 this year.

The Nominated Senator told the Senate that she was very sorry for what she did. She apologized to the other Senators and the staff members who might have been upset by her bad behavior. She said she never meant to make it seem like she was making fun of the Senate.

Senator Orwoba was accused of saying things about some Parliament officials that were not true. She had said that they were giving sexual favors, but she did not have any proof of this.
