Serum 2 gets a serious sound upgrade

Steve Duda and Xfer Records just released Serum 2, the next version of their popular wavetable synthesizer. The new version adds several fresh oscillator types that greatly expand what musicians can create. These include Multisample, Sample, Granular, and Spectral oscillators, which let users go far beyond standard wavetables. The wavetable oscillator itself has become more powerful with a Smooth Interpolation mode that creates seamless transitions.

The Multisample Oscillator helps users recreate actual instruments with great accuracy. It comes with many recorded instrument samples and works with the SFZ file format when you want to bring in your multi-samples. The Sample Oscillator plays back audio but does much more than that. It finds loop points automatically, lets you change loop timing, creates tape stop effects, slices samples, pulls out musical information, and works with all the FM, phase distortion, and distortion tools.

Serum 2 offers granular synthesis through its Granular Oscillator, which breaks sounds into tiny pieces for unique textures. The Spectral Oscillator analyzes harmonics and finds attack sounds, allowing deep manipulation of both time and frequency aspects. Users will love the dual filter setup, which features new filter types, better mixing options, and a completely rebuilt effects section featuring dual buses plus a master effects chain.

Music makers can buy Serum 2 from Xfer Records for $189 right away or $249 later. Anyone who already has Serum can upgrade for free. The package includes over 626 preset sounds and 288 wavetables to start with. It works as a VST3, AU, or AAX plugin in 64-bit format. Beyond the new oscillators, Serum 2 adds helpful workflow tools like better effect routing, an arpeggiator, and a clip sequencer for faster music creation.
