Seven killed as bridges collapse near Ukraine

Seven people died and dozens suffered injuries when bridges fell across two areas of western Russia near Ukraine. The disasters happened during Saturday night and early Sunday morning across the Bryansk and Kursk regions. Emergency crews rushed to help survivors trapped under twisted metal and broken train cars. Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz said 66 people needed medical care after the passenger train crashed. Three children were among those hurt when the road bridge smashed onto railway tracks below.

A passenger train heading toward Moscow went off the rails after the bridge collapsed onto the tracks. Videos posted online showed rescue workers climbing over damaged train cars as people screamed for help. The freight train derailment happened later that same night when another bridge failed across the neighboring Kursk region. The locomotive driver was taken to the hospital with various injuries sustained in the second crash. Part of the freight train fell onto the road beneath the damaged bridge structure.

Moscow Railways first blamed the Bryansk crash on illegal interference before removing that claim from official statements. Russian prosecutors have initiated investigations into both bridge failures, but have not shared details about the possible causes. Ukraine has not commented on either incident despite past Russian accusations about railway sabotage. Infrastructure attacks and failures have increased throughout Russia since the war started in 2022. Emergency teams and ambulances responded to both crash sites to help injured passengers and crew members.
