Shaheen Ahamed warns Savar tanneries choke leather exports

Bangladesh's leather sector remains trapped below the one billion dollar export threshold despite operating for more than ten years at this level. The industry lacks Leather Working Group certification, which prevents access to premium international markets and forces producers to sell raw materials at reduced prices. Environmental compliance failures at the Savar Tannery Estate compound these challenges, as the Central Effluent Treatment Plant releases untreated water into surrounding areas. Foreign buyers avoid Bangladeshi leather products due to certification gaps and substandard environmental practices.

Industry experts estimate the sector could reach five billion dollars in exports by 2030 if barriers were removed. India operates over 150 certified tanneries while Pakistan maintains more than 80 facilities with proper credentials. Bangladesh currently exports wet blue semi-processed leather rather than finished goods, which generates significantly lower revenue. The sector requires infrastructure improvements, compliance upgrades, and investment in modern technology to unlock its export potential.
