Shava urges teachers to lead Zimbabwe's industrial growth

Zimbabwe's higher education minister urged new teachers to lead national industrial development by blending cultural heritage with practical innovation during Marymount Teachers College's graduation ceremony. Dr Frederick Shava, represented by official Willie Davison Ganda, emphasized that teacher training reforms now prioritize hands-on skills to support economic growth targets. He noted all 19 national teacher colleges updated curricula under the Education 5.0 model, shifting focus toward producing problem-solvers rather than theoretical learners.

Shava highlighted concerns over female dominance in teacher training programs, calling the gender gap in science fields alarming. College principal Martin Mukwazhe reported progress on commercial ventures, including garment manufacturing, set to expand through a new industrial plant before year-end. Three hundred seventy-two graduates received certificates at the event, 89% of whom were women. University officials praised the institution's shift from classroom theory to operating functional enterprises like honey processing and farming projects. Shava stressed that cultural identity must anchor technological advancement to achieve national development goals.
