Ugandan Officials Push for Hospital Upgrade and Road Development in Sheema.
Sheema District leaders have urged President Museveni to upgrade Kitagata Hospital to a regional referral facility and tarmac the Bwizibwera-Kabwohe-Kitagata road during his recent Parish Development Model assessment tour in the Ankole sub-region.
Naome Kibaaju, Member of Parliament for Sheema North, addressed the Ugandan President on Tuesday, highlighting that the road project has appeared in multiple financial year budgets without implementation.
"Your Excellency, the Bwizibwera-Kitagata via Kabwohe road needs to be upgraded to tarmac. It has been in multiple financial year budgets but remains unworked. Your Excellency, you once pledged to have it constructed," Kibaaju said.
The legislator emphasized Kitagata Hospital's critical role in providing healthcare services across numerous districts, including Rukungiri, Kasese, Sheema, Rubirizi, and Buhweju. "We request that you upgrade it to a regional referral hospital so we can access improved and expanded services," she added.
Dickson Kateshumbwa, representing Sheema Municipality in Parliament, referenced previous discussions with Uganda National Roads Authority officials regarding the road's status. "In April last year, MPs held a meeting with then UNRA boss Allen Kagina, where we discussed and received updates on the Bwizibwera-Nsiika-Kabwohe road project and related concerns," Kateshumbwa said.
He expressed confidence that presidential intervention would lead to construction, thereby improving trade, healthcare access, and service delivery between Sheema, Mbarara, and Buhweju districts.
Kitagata Hospital currently operates as a general hospital in Sheema District, serving approximately 500,000 people despite having merely 100 beds, underscoring the urgent need for expansion advocated by local leadership.
