Six workers perished when floodwaters surged through Golden Reef Mine's underground operations in Eiffel Flats, Kadoma. National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the victims as Jacob Maposa, Colleen Sibanda, Nevers Makarichi, Simbarashe Bangira, Danai Mashoko, and Givemore Chiredzi, all residents of Umbark and Maratonga Village. The men became trapped with no evacuation route as water rapidly filled the shaft following regional precipitation.
Authorities emphasized that compliance with safety regulations remains critical for protecting workers in Zimbabwe's mining sector. Nyathi cautioned operators against using flood-prone shafts during wet conditions, when rainfall dramatically increases hazards for underground personnel.
