Six Months for Surety in Kiggundu Murder Case

Abdul Swamadu Muyomba will spend six months behind bars at Luzira prison. The High Court put him there because he failed to bring forward a suspect he promised to guarantee. He admitted he couldn't pay the 250 million Ugandan shillings he had promised if the suspect ran away.

The missing suspect is Bruhan Balyejusa Kalyango. He stands accused with seven others of killing Major Muhammad Kiggundu and his bodyguard, Sergeant Steven Mukasa, back in 2016. Four judges, led by Susan Okalany, made this decision after Thomas Jatiko from the public prosecutor's office asked for it. The other three judges were Boniface Wamala, Vincent Wagona, and Alice Komuhangi Khauka.

Two more people who also guaranteed Balyejusa must come to court and explain why they shouldn't go to jail like Muyomba did. The law says that when someone you guarantee runs away, you must tell the court and pay what you promised. If you don't pay, you go to jail. The court has also ordered police to arrest Balyejusa, who keeps skipping his court dates after he gets bail.

The other people charged in this murder case include Sheikh Yahaya Mwanje, Yusuf Nyanzi, Mohammed Buyondo, Abdu Wahab Sendegeya, Musa Ssekandi, Jibril Kalyango, and Noordin Lutaya. Evidence shows that Sheikh Mwanje was seen near Northern Bypass right before the murders happened in Masanafu, a part of Kampala, on November 26, 2016.

Before the attack, Mwanje had allegedly shared recordings with nasty speech about Kiggundu. Records from prosecutors show Kiggundu had reported threats from Mwanje earlier. Mwanje supposedly talked often with the other accused men. Phone records of these talks were deleted right after they happened. Prosecutors claim Mwanje, who used to lead Nakasero Mosque, fought with Kiggundu about who should run the mosque, which led to the killings.

Balyejusa becomes the second person to run away from a big murder case. A few years ago, Shafique Kasujja escaped during his trial for killing police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi in 2017. Balyejusa was also charged in that case. Kaweesi died with his bodyguards, Kenneth Erau and Godfrey Mambewa, on March 17, 2017. With Balyejusa gone, both murder cases face problems since he was a key suspect in both.
