Solar lights up Zimbabwe energy wave

Zimbabwe's high-altitude tropical location makes it perfect for solar power. The country enjoys clear winter skies that make it ideal for clean energy production. Private businesses already lead the way, with many companies running mostly on solar power. More homeowners put panels on their roofs every day. The government helps hospitals, clinics, and schools install basic solar systems for lights, vaccine refrigeration, and computers.

Rural areas benefit from solar-powered water pumps as part of national borehole programs. Thanks to new multi-year plans providing solar packages, villages no longer need to wait for the main electricity grid. Some communities share larger installations through mini-grid systems at business centers. Cabinet recently approved an agreement with the International Solar Alliance for a technology center at Chinhoyi University. This research hub will gather data on best practices for solar implementation nationwide.

Energy Minister July Moyo wants the center to explore making solar panels locally. He also hopes to develop battery manufacturing using Zimbabwe's abundant resources, including lithium, iron, phosphates, and carbon. Smart metering could let panel owners sell extra electricity back to the national grid during peak production times. The research center must quickly connect current projects with plans to maximize limited capital investments.
