Somali women drown as Channel crossing claims 25 lives

Two Somali women perished during a Channel crossing attempt Saturday morning when approximately 100 migrants departed northern France by boat. French authorities rescued 60 individuals from the water near Neufchâtel-Hardelot beaches in the Pas-de-Calais region. Emergency responders transported a family experiencing moderate hypothermia to Boulogne hospital. Officials confirmed the casualties bring this year's crossing death toll to 25 people.

Last year, 50 fatalities were reported during similar Channel crossings, according to French coastguard records. More than 30,000 migrants have reached Britain via small boats in 2025. The figure surpasses 50,000 since Labour assumed power last July. France and Britain recently established a returns agreement aimed at deterring dangerous crossings through migrant exchanges.
