Channel crossing claims 27th life as UK, France stall

Authorities discovered a woman's body Sunday morning near Boulogne-sur-Mer after she attempted an illegal English Channel crossing. Officials have not released her age or nationality. The death follows Saturday's incident where two Somali women perished when their boat encountered trouble. These fatalities bring this year's crossing death toll to at least 27 people.

Emergency services responded to 14 distress calls Saturday as nearly 900 migrants attempted the dangerous journey. More than 33,000 people have made illegal crossings since January 2025. Prosecutor Cécile Gressier will investigate potential connections between the latest death and a separate incident at Equihen-Plage. Record numbers continue crossing despite increased French enforcement efforts and substantial UK financial support.
