South Sudan Women Unite, Press Leaders to End Conflict

Women leaders from across South Sudan's civil society organizations are stepping up with a powerful plea to regional heads of state. They're demanding decisive action to prevent another catastrophic civil war that threatens to tear their nation apart.

A united front of women's groups, including the South Sudan Women's Coalition for Peace and multiple organizational representatives, has issued an urgent call. They're imploring the Intergovernmental Authority on Development member states to intervene and stop the escalating political tensions between President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar.

Their message rings clear and uncompromising: war cannot be an acceptable solution to national challenges. These women understand intimately the devastating consequences of prolonged conflict, highlighting how violence disproportionately impacts women and children. They emphasized the economic hardships that make survival increasingly difficult for families across South Sudan.

The extraordinary summit, led by Djibouti's President Israel Omar Guelleh, represents a critical moment for potential peace. These women who signed the 2018 Revitalized Agreement are demanding accountability and intervention. They're speaking out against potential warfare in Western Equatoria, Western Bahr El Ghazal, and Upper Nile States, where displacement and loss of life threaten to become widespread.
