St Petersburg Teens Snub Low Pay Jobs for Big Bucks

Teenage workers want higher pay these days. Over 18,000 St. Petersburg teens have updated their job applications. They ask for 36,500 rubles monthly, up from 29,500 rubles last year. Their salary wishes grow faster than what companies offer them. Most jobs available to young people pay under 29,000 rubles per month.

Students between 14 and 18 years old most often search for jobs in the service industries. About 16 percent look for service work. Sales positions attract 15 percent of teen applicants. Manual labor appeals to 14 percent of youth job hunters. Transport and delivery jobs interest 13 percent of teenage workers. Restaurant positions draw another 11 percent of young applicants.

Money drives most teens to find jobs. Research shows 84 percent work just to spend cash. Employers notice teens expect more money but bring limited experience. Labor experts say the market faces challenges with these rising expectations. Teenagers compete with adults for entry-level positions at higher wages.
